Review of the book Propaganda w epoce hellenistycznej
Propaganda w epoce hellenistycznej na przykładzie działań władców z dynastii Seleucydów (Propaganda in the Hellenistic period on the example of actions the rulers of the Seleucid dynasty) is a publication of doctoral thesis by Magdalena Butkiewicz, assistant professor in Institute of Media Education and Journalism and also an editor of “The Quarterly of Media Sciences”. The monograph is a historical analysis of the propaganda activities of the Seleucids in the Hellenistic period from the point of view of modern theory and practice of propaganda.
A book was published by Bernardinum Publishing House, consists of three chapters and 250 pages. First chapter of Butkiewicz’s dissertation is comparative analyse of propaganda techniques using in political communication in pre-media, ancient epoque and in modern, mass media practice. Second chapter is an analyse of propaganda techniques using by rulers of the Seleucid dynasty, especially by Seleucus I Nicator (c. 358 BC – 281 BC). Third chapter is an analyse Biblical and non-Biblical texts from this period, which have a propagandistic character.
Term of propaganda was first used in modern times by Pope Gregory XV in the name of the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith, established in 1622. Since this date propaganda has a pejorative meaning. But in ancient time propaganda was a major part of political communication of rulers, using regular in political and public life. It was a “natural” part of govern. But was not natural – we can say in modern semiotics categories. Many times was the instrument of domination over people, manipulation, lies and promoting dominant ideology. We associate propaganda rather with the twentieth-centuries totalitarianisms such as communism or fascism. But the history of propaganda is much older. Amazing that is also present in the sacred texts of the Bible. Fortunately Butkiewicz is a media theologian, wisely combines the Biblical knowledge with modern theory of propaganda, not criticizes the Bible and ancient rulers, just writes about how it was.
