Review of the book Dziecko w mediach
Dziecko w mediach (Child in the Media) is a collective monograph edited by Magdalena Butkiewicz Ph.D., Aleksandra Gralczyk Ph.D. and Rev. Krzysztof Marcyński SAC Ph.D. The book was prepared after scientific conference Child in the Media, organized by Institute of Media Education and Journalism at Faculty of Theology of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw, on May, 8th 2013. Monograph consists of six parts and 29 scientific articles, and has 530 pages. The main theme of the monograph is a functioning of the media in a child’s life, in various aspects (educational, legal) and types of the media (television, press, advertising and radio).
Media education of child in the age 3-9 years old is a new challenge for media scholars and educators in Poland. The new area for researchers is a media education in kindergarten and home media education. Authors of the articles also presented some aspects of education through the media, presenting the image of a child in the media, with selected media threats (sexualization, violence, manipulation in advertising). Particularly important is the education through radio, learns children audial sensitivity and empathy.
Authors refer to the epistemological conception of Aristotle. The child is like „tabula rasa” (blank slate). Nowadays this „tabula” are filled of media messages, often without the support of family and formal education. It is a serious problem, left out in the system of media education in Poland. This publication is an opportunity to reform this system and taking new social activities.
